Can I use my own laptop?
Yes. All students must bring their own laptop. However, Sheridan requires standardization to be able to fully support our students in the Sheridan environment. Your laptop must meet minimum hardware and software requirements set by your program. See Laptop Requirements for details. Only approved laptops will be allowed full access to our network and have program-required software installed (following Laptop Activation process).
Do I have to buy a new laptop each year?
The Mobile Computing program Laptop Requirements are the minimum main stream configuration approved for the current academic year (September until the end of August). Your laptop after the current academic year may no longer be valid. You may be required to upgrade or purchase another laptop.
Can I use Windows 10 on my laptop?
Yes. Beginning in the January 2016 semester Mobile Computing students can run a supported version of Windows 10. The supported Windows operating systems for Mobile Computing programs are:
Can I use Windows 8 on my laptop?
Beginning in the January 2014 semester, Mobile Computing students who are in a Windows-based program can use a laptop running Windows 8.1. The supported Windows operating systems for Mobile Computing programs now include:
Can I use Windows 7 on my laptop?
Yes. Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate) is the required OS for all Mobile Computing students who are coming to Sheridan with a Windows laptop for the 2013-2014 academic year.
How do I get course-required software?
Many of the favourite software applications used by mobile computing students along with faculty, staff and students using Sheridan devices are available through AppsAnywhere.
How long will my laptop be supported by my Mobile Computing program?
Laptop specifications are valid for 1 academic year. You may be required to upgrade or purchase another laptop. Please be aware that a laptop used in the May-August term may not be acceptable in the September term.
I'm not using an OS outlined in the requirements. Can I have IT Service Desk software support?
No. The IT Service Desk can only support the operating system outlined in the hardware/software requirements.
Where and when is support available to me?
Mobile Computing students have access to a wide variety of support resources. In addition to being able to access a growing list of online, self-help tools, you have access to staff professionals in the IT Service Desk. What happens if my computer crashes?
Visit the IT Service Desk to determine what the problem is. If it is hardware related or caused by software unsupported by the IT Service Desk, you will be required to take your laptop to its original point of sale or a third party service centre to be fixed.
Where would I go to get my laptop repaired?
Visit the IT Service Desk to determine the nature of the problem. If it is a hardware problem, you will be required to bring your laptop to its original point of sale or a third party service centre to be fixed.
What if some of my own personal software is interfering with program-required software?
The IT Service Desk cannot support software other than program-required software. You will have to remove the conflicting software.
NOTE: If it is determined that the problem is with your operating system, or corruption due to a virus or conflicting, non-supported applications, you will be responsible for restoring your laptop to its original state which may require re-installation of the Operating System.
What if my laptop breaks during an academic semester?
You will need to obtain support from your original point of sale or a third party service centre. Students in a Mobile Computing program are eligible for an emergency laptop loaner that would provide short-term use of a laptop for academic purposes.
Do I need to buy a laptop bag?
Yes. Protecting your laptop is important to Sheridan and it should be for you as well. You should purchase a laptop bag when you purchase your laptop. It is also highly recommended that you purchase some sort of security accessories through the vendor (such as a Kensington Lock).
Should I buy warranty coverage for my laptop?
Students are strongly encouraged to obtain warranty coverage from your initial point of sale. It is recommended that you obtain three years extended warranty coverage to ensure your laptop is covered for the duration of your program of study. Note however, that your program's laptop requirements are valid for one academic year. You may be required to upgrade or purchase another laptop. Therefore note that a laptop used in the May-August term may not be acceptable in the September term.
Are there additional costs for my Mobile Computing program?
The Mobile Technology Service Fee of $85 (per term) is included in your tuition fee invoice. For more information on tuition fees, and what they include, please see the Academic Fees page.
As a mobile student, what fees do I have to pay?
Information Technology Fee of $150 is payable by all students. Students in Mobile Computing programs will be charged the Mobile Technology Services Fee of $85 per academic term.
If I'm a part time student, will I have reduced Mobile Technology Services Fees?
Yes. Part time students have a reduced Mobile Technology Services Fee of $6 per credit, with the maximum charge of $90 per semester.
Will OSAP cover the cost of my laptop purchase?
All students who apply for OSAP are considered for a computer allowance of $500 per year. Sheridan includes the Mobile Technology Service Fee (program charge) as part of the cost of mobile programs in the OSAP needs assessment.
How do I get on to the Sheridan Network?
Accessing Sheridan’s wireless network has never been easier. Users can simply login with their Sheridan credentials to gain to access to Sheridan’s network. Please the Network Access page for complete details.
What if my laptop is lost/stolen?
A lost or stolen laptop is not covered under your vendor's warranty. Report your stolen laptops to Sheridan's security – regardless of where the crime took place. It is highly recommended that you purchase some sort of security accessories through the vendor (such as a Kensington Lock).
What happens if I lose my AC Adaptor?
If you lost your adaptor on campus, you should visit the security desk at your campus and check the lost and found. If you adaptor is truly lost, you will need to purchase a new one from the original point of sale.
